The best thing that could ever happen to me would be winning the lottery.

(source)
Or taking multiple vacations each year to exotic locations.
Or buying a huge house in the country.
Or having a lifetime supply of Larabars at my fingertips.
However, I think I’m going to say winning the lottery would take the cake because if I won the lottery, I could do all those things.
If you ask the Husband what the best thing that could happen to him was, his answer would be a little bit different.
In fact, the best thing that could ever happen to him occurred last night.
I lost my voice.
What started as a tickle in my throat on Thursday night turned into me not being able to talk at all last night. Pair that up with a headache and earache, and it was a recipe for disaster.
Although I was hurting, the Husband still found it necessary to laugh at my attempt to talk whenever I tried to. Don’t worry Husband, I just feel like I have shard of glass in my throat – but you keep laughing away.
Thankfully, I have a great holistic doctor who was able to take me this morning to figure out what’s going on. Pair that up with a heavy dose of natural meds and a 3 hour nap and I’m feeling a little bit better. Kind of. Now I’m kind of queasy.
But that’s besides the point. And that’s why there is absolutely no pictures of food on this post today. Whenever I’m sick, vegetables don’t appeal to me, so I have to sneak them in – enter in smoothies and soup.
While I was drinking my smoothie for lunch, it reminded me that I needed to get on the whole giveaway winner thing – so, the winner of the Glass Dharma $25.00 gift certificate is:
The one and only Katelyn! If you don’t know Katelyn, you should. She is the sweetest and one of the most genuine ladies out there – and so absolutely mature for her age. I <3 her.
No need to cry folks – I know you all wanted to win. Which is why Cheryl at Glass Dharma is giving each and every one of you the opportunity to receive a glass straw.
I know, right? Best. Thing. Ever.
Earth Day is next week and Glass Dharma is doing its part by spreading the word to restaurants about the effects of using plastic straws. In return, Glass Dharma is offering the following to its customers. The following is taken from an email which was sent to me by Cheryl from Glass Dharma.
“Each entrant will:
1) Write and send (snail mail) a letter to a restaurant — (up to 5 different restaurants for up to 5 free straws)
2) Copy your letter, please include full contact information of the restaurant, into a comment on the blog where you saw the contest.
3) Send an email to earthday@glassdharma.com with a copy of your letter, including contact info of the restaurant AND your personal contact info so that a free GlassDharma Glass Straw can be mailed to you.
Contact information for entrants and restaurants must include, name, mailing address and email address.
A GlassDharma Simple Elegance Glass Straw (SE9.5NA8) will be mailed to each participant directly from the GlassDharma manufacturing facility in Fort Bragg, CA for writing the letter and including the contact information.
Yes, each participant gets a free glass straw! One free straw per entry (multiple entries, up to 5, must include a different restaurant for each entry).
GlassDharma will award one Grand Prize Winner a $100.00 gift certificate coupon code. There will be a few bloggers involved in this project, but only 1 Grand Prize Winner. Entries received through 4/30/2011. Grand prize drawing to be held on 5/4/2011. Participants from USA and Canada only will be eligible for this contest.”
This is no joke – you can receive up to FIVE Glass Dharma straws just for getting the word out to local restaurants about their products. I think this is an awesome contest. Get on it folks!
And while you’re at it, buy and mail me a lottery ticket. I won’t send you a glass straw, but I will be eternally grateful if I win millions.
This is no joke – you can receive up to FIVE Glass Dharma straws just for getting the word out to local restaurants about their products. I think this is an awesome contest. Get on it folks!
Question: What is the best thing that could ever happen to you?

OH MY GODDDD I never win anything!! I love love love you, this just made me so happy:)) THIS is the best thing that could happen to me - next to the whole “winning a lifetime supply of larabars” thing:)
Hahaha p.s. I really like my winning comment it makes me sound like such a responsible person…
I really enjoy your winning comment… ha ha. Because really… we all love a good drink every once in a while.
I love my glass straw, but I haven’t used it in forever. I need to do that. Now.
I have Glass Dharma straws and they rock…I need to use them more!
Congrats to Katelyn!
What a great deal! Those glass straws are really cool.
The best thing that could ever happen to me is to have my husband come home safely.
You should mention your great doc is Dr 4tratton in Frankfort IL.
I don’t know any doctor 4trattons, but I do know a Dr. Stratton!
So excited! This is the best thing ever!
The best thing that could ever happen to me is getting a full-ride scholarship to grad school!
BTW- even though I just started reading your blog, I thought of you as I ate breakfast at the Bob’s Red Mill natural food store and restuarant here in Portland (the companies home). It’s only 10 minutes from my boyfriends home. So good.
That is amazing! I didn’t know that existed!
the best thing that could ever happen to me would be to find out my family was given/inherited a beautiful stretch of land in the countryside with an adorable cobblestone cottage ..perhaps in new zealand or someplace like that… as well as some land in the caribbean
hehe
xoxo
I would LOVE to win the lottery!! There’s so much need in the world, I’d love to be able to offer MORE help!!
I lost my voice last night too! I still can’t talk and I hate it, I feel so helpless. My friends are loving it though, apparently I talk too much.
All my students loans would suddenly be paid!!
I sent a letter to White Spot!

Dear Mr. Gilley,
I hope you remember me. I’m Jade Belzberg and we used to live in the same neighborhood on Crescent Drive. I am now a sophomore at Western Washington University, interested in environmental issues and zoology. Of course, a big part of my education includes learning how humanity impacts the planet. One of the issues that alarms me the most is excess packaging and the amount of waste that it attributes to our earth.
Due to my interest in the environment, I would like to make you aware of the negative impact straws have on our earth. Recently I came across Glass Dharma, a company that manufactures glass straws. These straws are dishwasher safe, microwave safe and guaranteed to last a lifetime, (if broken, the company will gladly replace the straw for no charge). Imagine the difference if your White Spot restaurants used these straws instead of the one-use plastic straws that add to the burden of waste in our landfills.

This is a brilliant idea. I don’t think anyone in Hawai’i knows about this phenomenon… great opportunity to share, especially w/Earth Day right around the corner!
Hmmm….the best thing that could ever happen to me….winning the lottery would be pretty awesome, but I would settle for a lifetime supply of Justin’s Maple Almond Butter. That would make me pretty happy
The best thing that could happen to me would be….becoming a mom!
Winning the lotto would probably come in a close second!
Yeah, that one is likte #1 on my list too! With time!
Sorry for the bombardment of super long comments, but here is another letter:

Great! So now you would have to make a copy of that letter, send it to the restaurant AND to Glass Dharma for your free straw!
One of the best things that could happen to me actually DID happen today! The future husband and I signed a lease for our first apartment!! He’ll move in a month before the wedding, and I’ll move in right after. YAY!!
Awesome! I moved in before the wedding and he moved in after - perhaps it’s my controlling nature, but I wanted to get everything settled “my” way. haha!
Ha! That sounds like me and my family. When my sister loses her voice, the house gets really quiet…..
Lifetime supply of almond butter and Great Harvest bread…enough said
Oh and I love the winning comment!!!
Marketing genius, well done, Glass Dharma! I love that promo to pieces.
I hope you feel better soon, Chelsey!
I think winning the lottery would be the best thing to happen to me. I always wanted to buy a house in the country and not have to worry about where I would work when there’s nothing around for miles.
I hope you’re feeling better soon Chelsey! Sore thoats are so painful and annoying.
The best thing that could ever happen to me would be to be able to become a full-time ski bum in Colorado and still get paid like I work full-time…if only
Ahh! Poor Chelsey! A shard of glass!
ahaha, that’s so sad.
I hope its feeling better!
P.S! YOU need to do A vlog!!! Pretty pretty pretty please!
and I’m totally hitting up on the five glass straw thing! That’s L-E-G-I-T!
Wow, what an awesome deal!! I definitely want to do this this week! Those straws are so cool. Thanks, Chelsey!
Hahaha sorry about your voice! I know how it is - I once lost my voice when I was a camp counsellor. It made it even harder to keep those rowdy kids under control.
The best thing that could happen to me would be a trip around Europe with an unlimited credit card!
This is a great contest! A free glass straw just for sending a letter to a local restaurant?! I’m definitely going to be taking part in this!
I lost my voice once when I was teaching. It was horrible- it last around four days!! I took some time off but when I went back to work I still couldn’t talk very well…the kids just loved that. haha.
The best thing that could happen to me….my husband gets a good residency somewhere down south! We want to start our family and we live so far away right now. I’d really like to be closer.
The best thing that could happen to me is having four totally healthy kids- three boys and a girl. I know that sounds really weird, but I can’t wait to be a mom and good health is such a blessing. This is at some point down the road, not any time soon, haha
You know me and my baby obsession.
you and me both.
HAHAHH katelyn’s comment for the WIN
love it!!
the best thing ever would be if I could NEVER GET INJURIES!! GAH im a walking (or really, running) MESS
I’d have to say winning the lottery, too. I mean, money doesn’t buy happiness, but it sure does give you LOTS of options!!! And with as many & diverse interests as I have, I loooove options! : )
Wow what a great promotion, I’m definitely gonna take part.
Wow, how easy it that?! I am so getting together my info and mailing out letters STAT! It’s like winning the glass straw lottery…ok, that was way corny…I’m sorry I’m a dork! But heck, I’ll be a dork with up to 5 free glass straws! Woo hoo! Thanks Chelsey!
hmm…I think I’d just love the exotic trips with amazing food (and time off work to enjoy them)!
Well, one of the best things could be the end to lunch. Seriously, I’m not a fan. I was just catching up on some posts and I’m pretty excited lunch isn’t top on your list either. It’s always like, “Yay! It’s lunch time! Except…wait…I don’t like lunch…”

Dear Restauranteur:
I am sending this to you with the hopes of raising environmental awareness and the ways in which we can all work together to help keep our environment garbage free. Please read this letter and keep an open mind about how you can help!
Millions of plastic drinking straws are dumped into landfills every day, piling on top of other non-biodegradable items and contributing to a problem that we can’t solve overnight. Plastic straws are standard at any fast food restaurant, and many sit-down restaurants automatically serve them in drinks. People use them at home and never think about what happens to the throw-away plastic after it hits the trash can.
Aside from ecological issues, plastic straws may also contribute to poor health! Bisphenol A (BPA), one of the toxic chemicals in plastic straws, has been linked to everything from breast cancer to birth defects – and to make matters worse, it’s been proven to leech out of your straw and into your beverage (Markey, C. M., Munoz de Toro, M., Sonnenschein, C., & Soto, A. M., 2001- Journal of Biology of Reproduction, 65: 1215-1223).
We can reduce the health risks and eliminate this waste from landfills by using glass straws. Glass straws don’t leach toxins into your food as you drink. Each time a customer uses a glass straw in your restaurant equals one less plastic straw ending up in our landfill. One glass straw replaces thousands of plastic straws used everyday. In the same way that we are now using cloth bags when shopping, glass straws can be used to replace the waste from plastic straws. Glass drinking straws can help both our health and the environment.
Fortunately, Glass Dharma is committed to improving our health and saving the environment. This North American company, based in California, offers a wide variety of high quality, elegant glass straws. Their products are made from Borosilicate glass: a type of glass with the main ingredients of silica and boron oxide. Borosilicate glass is most well known for having very low thermal expansion, making it resistant to thermal shock, more so than any other common glass. It is also non-porous and Hypo-allergenic. These straws are easy to clean and come with a lifetime warranty. Not only would these straws reduce your environmental footprint, they also heighten aesthetic quality to perfectly compliment the taste of your beverages.
People may not know what a big difference a little straw can make, but with a little research it’s easy to see why glass straws are a clear alternative to plastic. I strongly encourage you to research the benefits of glass straws and the difference you will be making to our environment and possibly even our health. We can all do our part. Please, start using Glass Dharma’s glass straws in your restaurant today and make a difference for years to come. We can all do our part- start today with Glass Dharma glass straws in your restaurant.
To explore their wonderful line of products, and receive more information about using glass straws in your establishment, please contact Glass Dharma at their website, http://www.glassdharma.com, or email info@glassdharma.com.
Thank-you,
Jasmine Dean
Great letter Jasmine - now all you ahve to do is amake a copy of th eletters and send them to both the restaurants AND glass dharma with a note on it telling them whose blog you saw the deal on!
I emailed the letter and the contact information for the restaurants to the email address that was in your post and let them know I saw it on your blog. And made copies of the letter to stick in the mail. But I was wondering, do I have to send a seperate email for each restaurant? right now the email was pretty much in the same format as my post.
You have to send snail mail to the restaurants!
Sorry, for the confusing reply- I understand I have to send each letter by snail mail to the restaurants, but I meant when I was sending the letter to glass dharma for the entries- do they want a seperate email for each entry or can I enter 5 times with the same email?
I’m not sure - I would do five separate just to be safe!
Physical letters in the mail and send my email (with copies of letters) to Glass Dharma referencing your blog! This is amazing and I’m doing it as well with my bf so we can bring them to the cottage. We try to make as minimal an impact as possible up there but sometimes you just want a straw. I will admit - I did use some of the other letters as a jump-off point.

As Earth Day approaches I am sending this to you with the hopes of raising environmental awareness and trying to make an active difference in the G.T.A. I would like to make you aware of the negative impact plastic straws have on our environment. Millions of plastic drinking straws are thrown away daily creating a vast amount of biodegradable garbage in our landfills.
The move to charge for plastic shopping bags in Toronto has caused people to rethink their need for the bag in the first place. Often consumers will decline the plastic bag or chose to carry their items in reusable cloth bags. A small change can make a large impact on our environment as a whole.
It is my desire that Toronto lead the way on reducing drinking straws as well and this can actively be led by restaurants in the community offering glass straws. I believe that by simply offering a patron the choice of plastic, glass or no straw we would begin to see a decline in waste.
Glass Dharma is a company that manufactures glass straws and is concerned about the impact that plastic straws have on our environment. Based in California their straws are dishwasher and microwavable safe and are guaranteed to last a lifetime. It is my hope that (NAME HERE) would consider implementing the use of glass straws and helping to diminish the amount of plastic that ends up in our landfills.
To view their products and to receive further information about using glass straws in your establishment please contact Glass Dharma at http://www.glassdharma.com, or email info@glassdharma.com.
Thank you for allowing me to present this opportunity for positive action and results.
Regards, Jordana

Letter:
Earth Day is upon us, and we’re all taking this time to assess how we can better “green” our lifestyles, from the products we buy to the establishments we frequent. I would like to pass along a simple idea that would help Sunflower reduce waste: switch to glass drinking straws. The plastic straws you provide daily in your restaurant to customers create a daunting amount of waste in our already-overcrowded landfills. Plus, bisphenol A (BPA), a toxic chemical in plastic straws, has been linked to a number of health problems, including breast cancer and birth defects.
Glass Dharma is a California-based company that manufactures a variety of high-quality, eye-catching glass drinking straws. Made of borosilicate tubing, the strongest glass commercially available, Glass Dharma’s straws are microwave/dishwasher safe, backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee and come with a lifetime guarantee against breakage. Best of all, they are environmentally friendly and won’t leach any toxins into food. Plus, in my opinion, Glass Dharma’s really do make for an elegant, unique addition to any table setting.
Switching out or offering an alternative to plastic drinking straws is a small, simple change that could have a big impact on the environment.

Dear Wheel of Life,
As an environmentally and health conscious customer, I greatly admire your already forwarded thinking restaurant philosophy that serves 100% vegan food that even omnivores can enjoy. Not only is this healthy for our well-being, but healthy for our planet too. As our Earth fosters us, we should, in return, take an effort to protect it.
With the current rise in the Green Movement and Earth Day (4/22) approaching, I’d like to suggest another step towards greater, greener health. All of us need fluids to sustain us every day, but have you ever considered how many millions of your plastic straws pile up in a landfill each year for that?
Fortunately, Glass Dharma is committed to improving our ways of living and reducing our carbon footprint. This North American company, based in our very own (local) California, offers a wide variety of high quality, elegant glass straws. Their products are not only aesthetically beautiful, but they are easy to clean and come with a lifetime warranty. Think of how many straws we can save from going into landfills if customers that ate in were given these straws to use instead of those flimsy, cheap plastics! These straws would definitely complement your drinking glasses and give it a classy, luxurious edge to your eatery. It would heighten people’s mindset into thinking that they are “eating at a((n) upscale) restaurant” rather than simply eating at a vegan-food joint.
I like to think an eco-friendly life is an investment; it is an investment towards a promising, beautiful future and theses straws from Glass Dharma perfectly exemplify it.
Thank you for taking your time to read my letter and I hope you can give it some thoughts and consideration for both us and our planet.
Sincerely,
Rika Kawamura, UCI Student.

Hello,
Plastic straws pose a danger for animals in our community and our Earth. Lots of plastic is getting thrown away and going to our landfills.
Using glass straws can make such a difference!
Glass Dharma Straws are straws made of glass and they are reusable. This is both great for the environment and for your restaurant because there will be much less litter.
I hope you will consider the change from plastic straws to glass straws for your restaurant!

Dear Restaurateur,
As most are aware, Earth Day was this past week, and many restaurants helped the environment by finding ways to cut down on the use of plastic and non-recyclable items. I wanted to write you in hopes of bringing to your knowledge a great opportunity to help the environment. As you know, every person who comes to your restaurant gets a drink, which comes with a plastic straw. Millions of straws are thrown away each day, filling up landfills that we do not have space for and that harm the environment. However, I wanted to let you know about Glass Dharma, The Original Glass Straw. Glass Dharma is a company that values the economy and manufactures glass straws to reduce the use of millions of plastic straws. They are dishwasher and microwaveable safe and are guaranteed to last a lifetime. I believe that if restaurants simply started using these straws, it would diminish the amounts of plastic straws that end up in landfills. I hope that your company will consider using glass straws to help contribute to the environment. For more information about these straws, please visit http://www.glassdharma.com or email info@glassdharma.com. Thank you so much for considering this amazing opportunity!

This is so awesome! Here is a copy of my letter and the 5 restaurants I sent it to!
Dear …
Although Earth Day is officially celebrated on April 22nd, shouldn’t we all be doing our part the other 364 days of the year? There are many ways for consumers and business owners to help celebrate Earth Day everyday, and as an environmentally and health conscious customer I appreciate restaurants who are actively reducing their carbon footprint.
One seemingly inconsequential item provided in restaurants across America, the plastic straw, creates a daunting amount of waste in our already-overcrowded landfills. Plus, bisphenol A (BPA), a toxic chemical in plastic straws, has been linked to a number of health problems, including breast cancer and birth defects.
But there is a solution. Glass Dharma, a local California company offers a wide variety of high quality, easy to clean glass straws; and their products come with a lifetime warranty! Switching out or offering an alternative to plastic drinking straws is a small, simple change that could have a big impact on the environment.
